Saturday Spin In

I've decided we need a new topic in blogland. How about Saturday Spin In? We can post what we've spun recently. If you'd like to join in the fun, comment below and I'll add your blog to a list of contributors. Don't have a blog? Email me your Saturday Spin In picture and I'll post it. Don't spin? You need to make a CD spindle at a cost of a couple of dollars. Interweave Knits directions are here.

Knitting in Literature: I'm sure you realize that there is much mention of knitting in the books we read. I am astounded at the number. Check out this list at Woolworks.

Here are samples from the site:

Non-Fiction
Notes from a Small Island, Bill Bryson
"Am I alone in thinking it odd that a people ingenious enough to invent paper, gunpowder, kites and any number of other useful objects, and who have a noble history extending back 3,000 years haven't yet worked out that a pair of knitting needles is no way to capture food?"

Children's Fiction
The Tusk Fairy, Nicola Smee
A little girl's knitted elephant unexpectedly unravels and the tusk fairy comes to the rescue.
Science Fiction and Fantasy
The Very Thought of You, Lynn Kurland
An 11th century tapestry-destroying bard learns to knit when transplanted to 20th century Scotland.
Mystery
The Veiled One, Ruth Rendell
Considerable knitting content; the murder weapon is a knitting needle.
General Fiction
The Twisted Sword (The Poldark series), Winston Graham
The last book in this series includes a description of handknit stockings and gloves.
The Fever Tree and Other Stories, Ruth Rendell
"A Needle for the Devil" is densely packed with knitting.

As strictly a knitter, I'll enjoy your Saturday Spinning vicariously. ;-) Bill Bryson is not only funny, I've learned a lot from his books.

A new teen book I just saw at the library (haven't read it yet) is Chicks with Sticks, by Elizabeth Lenhard (sp?). Drawing of girls knitting on the cover.

I like the idea of a Saturday Spin-In. --Syl

I read a knitting ref. in a book a bit ago, and now I can't remember where!

I'm looking forward to seeing all the lovely spinning. :)

Ack - I don't spin... yet. (Actually I did do it once many, many years ago...)

Some months ago I was at a weight watchers meeting that I regularly knit my way through and a woman came up to me and handed me a book. It is called "A Good Yarn" by Debbie Macomber. I haven't read it yet, but it is slowly working its way up in my bedside stack. It is about a group of women who meet at a knitting class at a yarn shop in Seattle and "soon an unbreakable bond is formed among the knitters in this poignant story of real women with real problems becoming real friends."

By the way, the shawl pattern is the Spanish Christening Shawl from folk Shawls by Cheryl Oberle.

I'll let you know when I get that spinning going ;)

I'll give this a try...posting regularly on anything at all is sometimes a challenge.
